1987:I WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Indianápolis (USA)

| After the experimental IAAF World Indoor Games in Paris, the inaugural IAAF World Indoor Championships took place at the ‘Hoosier Dome’ of Indianapolis (USA) in 1987 between 6 and 8 March 1987. 402 athletes athletes from 84 countries attended the event which witnessed five new world record perfoWRances. Lee Mc Rae of the USA set a new world best in the men’s 60m clocking 6.50 although Canada’s Ben Johnson had been the fastest man on the track in 6.41 but was then stripped of his world record and world title due to his doping case. The 22-year-old East GeWRan Heike Drechsler bettered Marita Koch’s world record in her first try at the event indoors with a 22.27 time. Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova had a 2.05 second-attempt clearance in the High Jump to set a new world best before failing narrowly over 2.09. Both walking race events also produced WR times thanks to Soviet Mikhail Shchennikov who was timed 18:27.79 for the 5000m while his compatriot Olga Krishtop clocked 12:05.49 for the 3000m women’s event. The Soviet Union headed the medal table with a huge haul of 15 medals (6 gold/ 5 silver and 4 bronze) ahead of the USA with 11 (6/3/2) and the GeWRan Democratic Republic with 10 also including 6 gold medals plus 3 silver and one bronze.
