| The event moved to the Far East, more precisely to the Japanese city of Maebashi which hosted the 7th edition of the World indoor championships on 5-7 March 1999. 487 athletes attended the competition representing 115 countries. The three-day event witnessed two new World bests at both 4×400 relays. On the men’s side the USA team recorded 3:02.83 while the Russian squad bettered its own previous mark by over two seconds by clocking 3:24.25. In addition, the competition was full of thrilling moments as it happened in the men’s Long Jump. Cuba’s Ivan Pedroso, bidding for a fourth consecutive title opened with 8.46m but Spain’s Yago Lamela leapt 8.56 in the final round to smash Robert Emmyan’s European record and leave Pedroso with just one chance to remain as world indoor champion. The then 27-year-old Cuban produced a huge 8.62 PB to regain the lead and manage the second best jump in history after Carl Lewis’s world record of 8.79. The USA team was capable of gaining 19 medals (3/8/8)
