Volunteer Guide
1- What it means to be a volunteer?
As a volunteer, you gain new and unique experiences and most importantly learn the intricacies of the organisation of a major event. This is a skill and experience that will serve you for the rest of your life.
It is an opportunity to interact with people of all backgrounds and of all ages and professions.
By volunteering, you will lend your own personality to help present Qatar to all our visitors as a gracious and hospitable host of world-class sporting events.
We need world-class volunteers to make that possible.
2- Why should I volunteer?
Without enthusiastic volunteers, a major sporting event such as the World Indoor Championships is incomplete. Whether assisting spectators at information desks, helping arrange transport for the athletes or officials, or supporting the community and media relations teams, it is the helpful and friendly volunteers that leave a lasting impression on the guests.
They create the atmosphere, and are often the most familiar faces of our organisation.
If you are interested in gaining new experiences and making new friends, we need you as a volunteer.
3- What role will I have as a volunteer?
As a volunteer you may choose or be asked to consider different roles based on your abilities. Some require skills and experience while others only require a friendly attitude and a smile.
Some examples of the tasks you may be asked to do are: assisting with the organisation of ceremonies, data entry, community relations, and assisting the officials managing various sporting events.
4- Where will I be volunteering?
All events at the World indoor Championships will take place at the Aspire Zone. Volunteers will be needed primarily on the grounds of the venue.
Additional volunteer locations can include the media and broadcasting centres, the media stands, and the VIP areas.
Some volunteers will also help the organizing committee welcome and manage guests at the official hotels of the championships, as well as the training facilities, and locations to and from which the guests will be arriving and departing during the course of the championships.
5- How many volunteers are needed?
Around 600 volunteers will contribute to making the World Indoor Championships a big success.
You will therefore be part of a very big family and the contribution of every volunteer is equally important.
6- Who can volunteer?
Anyone 14 years and above can apply online HERE to become a volunteer. Younger individuals (14-18 years old) who wish to volunteer must present an authorization letter endorsed by their parents.
The applicants must be able to communicate clearly and have basic skills in English. As this is a sporting event, specialised knowledge or skills in athletics or sport in general are advantageous.
We are looking for friendly, motivated, and enthusiastic volunteers who can work under pressure and know how to improvise.
We are looking for people who would like to help make Doha 2010 one of the most memorable athletics events in recent years and leave a lasting impression on our guests from all around the world.
7- How much time must I commit?
For the majority of the volunteers, the volunteer activities will be limited to the actual championships which will be held from March 12th to 14th 2010.
Some volunteers will, however, be required to join us one to two weeks before the championships. All volunteers will have to attend training sessions ahead of the championships to ensure they are ready for the big day.
8- What kind of training do the volunteers receive?
In order for the championships to be a success, volunteers will receive training in 2-4 obligatory training sessions, where they will learn how to react and respond appropriately for a broad selection of duties, which include: accreditation, visitor services, hotels, logistics, marketing, PR/media, IT/telecommunications, protocol, ticketing, transportation, and volunteer management.
